This is my grandfather, Lewis Louthood. Former Publisher of the Montreal Star & Weekend Magazine. The photo was taken by Yousuf Karsh, one of my all time favourite photographers.
I have no idea why Karsh did a portrait of my grandfather. My mother casually mentioned it one day a few years ago. Things like that tend to happen in my family.
“Oh yeah, Lester Patrick was an uncle, he played hockey.” (and then they named a league and a trophy after him).
“Patrick Swayze shares a great-grandfather with us.” (forever changing how dirty I felt about Dirty Dancing).
“Your Dad’s great aunt was a Lady & her husband a Baronet.” (how does this help me meet HRH Prince Harry?)
Both Karsh and my grandfather have passed away, so the mystery of why and how this photo came to be I will never know.
