Evergreen Book Club

Spring 2026

I often dream of winning the lottery and escaping to an island where I spend an entire year just reading. In this dream scenario I watch the ocean with a coffee in one hand and a book in the other. Somewhere in the background a Nancy Meyers inspired kitchen has bowls full of fruit that never attracts flies.

In reality I try to steal an hour, two if I’m lucky, with my phone in do not disturb mode. I light a candle and hope to make my 100 page reading goal for the day before the road noise outside my office window gets too distracting.

For Evergreen Book Club’s spring picks I’m hoping you’ll find yourself transported to entirely different surroundings - an elite university in New England, mid-century Montreal, a funeral in community, and the forests of British Columbia.

The debut novel by poet Joshua Whitehead has been hailed as an amazing work making the longest for the Giller Prize and the winner of Canada Reads 2021. You should be able to find it in multiple formats at every library and bookstore.

Reading classic novels is like eating kale - it’s never first on your list but you’re happy to know that you’ve done it. I’m trying to reframe in my mind how I feel about Canadian literary classics to make it feel less like a homework assignment and more like a discovery.

April 2026

I try to keep my reading fairly spoiler free by limiting myself to the back cover. I have to say I’m a sucker for anything set in a school environment and was a big fan of Heathers and Do Revenge so I’m hoping this will scratch the preppy mean girl itch.
