Sculpture Court Café by Giuseppe @SDMA
Balboa Park, San Diego
It’s hard to give props to a sandwich and salad greens and have anyone believe you. People’s hyperbole over a good lunch has gotten well out of control. What I will say is that I stopped to have lunch and it put the cherry on top of my Balboa Park afternoon.
Attached to the Museum of Art is an outdoor-ish café. I say outdoor-“ish” because it had semi walls at the front, and a white canvas top. The tables came complete with kraft paper and a bucket of crayons for those feeling inspired. The service was friendly but had the skill of an upscale bistro, which instantly made me nervous that it would blow my budget.
For $10 I got a ½ sandwich bigger than most whole sandwiches, of grilled portobello, roasted peppers, fontina and some other magical ingredients and a side salad. Generally side salads are pretty lame, and when I saw tastefully dressed greens I sighed. But when I tried it I couldn’t believe how much just lettuce and dressing could excite me.
To finish it off I sipped a doppio espresso while writing a card to my friend Amanda. It was the perfect place to cool down after my day in the park.
